True Grit

January 11, 2011 - 12:00 am Comments Off

Well, it finally happened. I was discussing movies with some of my younger co-workers earlier this week and one of them mentioned that he had seen the Coen Brother’s adaptation of True Grit over the weekend starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. He gave it a pretty good review and then commented that he now wants to see “the original” to which another co-worker replied “I didn’t know there was an original.” There it was and it landed with a thud. The fact that this young co-worker (who is bright and culturally aware) didn’t realize there was an “original” version of the movie kind of left me feeling like I had been lapped at the latest NASCAR race and what knowledge had come before me mattered naught. It made me wonder how many other things might be missed with the passage of time and generations, like the fact that the two movies were actually based on a brilliant novel written by Charles Portis and published in 1968; and more so, how (with this same passage of time) the big screen might be Read the rest of this entry »

Christmas Favorites

December 13, 2010 - 12:00 am Comments Off

It’s getting to be that time of year when we start a fired, grab a cup of hot cocoa and hunker down to watch our favorite holiday films. If you’ve been stuck on the same old film year after year here’s a list of a few that you might have forgotten about to spark your festivities. All I Want for Christmas (1991) is a comedy about two children in New York who create a plan to get what they most want for Christmas to see their parents back together again. Christmas in Connecticut (1945) is a comedy/romance about a food writer who has been caught in a lie about her being the perfect housewife and must now try to hide her fib when her boss and a returning war veteran invite themselves to her home for the “ideal” traditional Christmas. Jingle All the Way (1996) stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as a busier-than-get-out father who decides to find the year’s hottest toy for his son right before Christmas Day you can only imagine the hijinx that ensue.Bad Santa (2003) may not be suitable for children, and may not be the traditional “feel good” Christmas story, but it sure is funny. The plot line involves a down-and-out conman and his partner who pose as Santa and his helper to rob department stores when they get sidelined and befriended by an adorable, if troubled, kid. Prancer (1989) is the story of the daughter of an impoverished farmer who still believes in Santa Claus when she comes upon a reindeer who has an injured leg which she hides in her barn to nourish back to health until Santa can reclaim him.

The new Predators

October 1, 2010 - 12:00 pm Comments Off

Since the original Predator film, we’ve known that one Predator can wreak havoc when it comes to earth. But what happens when there’s more than one predator? And oh, did we forget to mention, when the humans are on an alien planet? The plot for Predators is a continuation, and not a remake, of the originals. Now there are two different types of predators: the original predator, and a much larger, stronger predator. Chosen for their impressive killing skills, the human group, including actors/actresses such as Adrien Brody (King Kong), Alice Braga (I am Legend), Walton Goggins (Justified), and Topher Grace (That ’70s Show), have been brought to the predators’ training ground. After losing two of their kind to humans, it seems the predators are looking to improve their hunting skills. Read the rest of this entry »

The Dark Knight

September 17, 2010 - 12:00 pm Comments Off

Starting with the phenomenal acting, and carrying through to the dark storyline, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight has the edge on the original Batman film. It’s not that easy of a statement to make. Tim Burton (Corpse Bride) does bring an element of darkness into the story, and Jack Nicholson brings out the Joker’s quirky, clownish nature. However, the 1989 cast portrays the Batman characters with a literal interpretation, whereas Nolan’s cast takes the literal portrait, and goes deeper.Following Batman Begins, The Dark Knight shows Batman feeling the weight of his role. With Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) as the new District Attorney, Bruce considers giving Batman a rest; that is, until the Joker comes along. The definition of psychotic, he turns the city upside down, and it’s up to Batman to stop him. The storyline truly is dark, placing characters in, what Roger Ebert describes, as ethical dilemmas that don’t have an easy solution (Rogerebert.com). Read the rest of this entry »

The nightmare returns

September 10, 2010 - 12:00 pm Comments Off

Since 1984, Freddy Krueger has haunted audiences’ dreams. The biggest reason for Nightmare’s success comes from Robert Englund, the actor who played Freddy in all seven films, as well as the 2003 Freddy vs. Jason. With the release of the 2010 version of A Nightmare on Elm Street, viewers were curious as to how Jackie Haley would compare.Alongside a new Freddy, the film has a new director. Samuel Bayer, a director of music videos till now, took on the role of reinventing Freddy. And when it surfaced that Michael Bay, the man responsible for Transformers and Pearl Harbor, was the new producer, excitement flared. The plot was relatively the same as the previous Nightmare films. Freddy is seeking revenge against the families that took his life. The killer accomplishes this goal by slipping into the dreams of those who got him in trouble and killing them. The character’s names are different from the original, except for Nancy that is. With nothing but a new last name, her character is almost identical to Nancy Thompson. Read the rest of this entry »
